Simple Words. Lasting Impact.
The words your child hears every day become the voice they hear in their own head. After 20+ years teaching kids martial arts in Midtown Toronto, we’ve seen how a few simple phrases build confidence, resilience, and character.
Every day, parents look for ways to build their child’s confidence. Sometimes the most powerful tools aren’t lessons or rewards. They’re words. Simple, everyday phrases that tell a child they’re capable, valued, and heard.
Here are 12 things to say to your child every day – and why each one matters.
Words That Build Confidence
“I believe in you.”
Kids borrow confidence from the adults they trust. Say it before a new class, a test, or the first day of school, and you tell them you expect them to rise. Try it: say it at the door, right before something that makes them nervous.
“I’m proud of how hard you tried.”
Praise effort, not just results. Children who feel valued for trying tend to keep going when something gets difficult, which is exactly what we ask of students on the mat. Try it: swap “Great job!” for “I saw how hard you worked on that.”
“Your voice matters.”
Ask for their opinion, then listen. Kids who feel heard speak up more clearly, whether that means asking a coach for help or telling a bully to stop. Try it: let them choose the weekend plan once a week.
“I love you just as you are.”
Confidence grows from security, not pressure. Unconditional acceptance gives your child a safe place to try, fail, and try again. Try it: say it after a rough day, especially one with no wins.
Words That Build Resilience
“Mistakes help you grow.”
Every black belt was once a beginner who fell, missed, or forgot the move. When you treat mistakes as feedback, your child stops fearing them. Try it: ask “What did you learn?” instead of “What went wrong?”
“You can do hard things.”
Challenge, with support, builds capable kids. Say it before the task feels doable, then remind them of the last hard thing they finished. Try it: name a past win, like a belt test or a new skill.
“It’s okay to lose.”
Losing teaches what winning can’t: how to recover, reflect, and shake hands. Kids who practise losing safely become adults unafraid to try. Try it: after a setback, offer a hug first, then ask what they’d try differently.
“Take a breath. I’m right here.”
Calm is a skill, and it can be taught. Slow breathing helps children settle big feelings, and your steady presence shows them how. Try it: breathe in for four counts and out for four, together.
Words That Build Character
“Thank you.”
Gratitude is a habit. Thank your child for specific things, like helping a sibling or tidying up, and they learn to notice and appreciate others. Try it: thank them for something small tonight.
“Tell me about your day.”
Curiosity beats interrogation. Open questions invite honest answers and give you an early look at friendships, worries, and wins. Try it: ask for the best part and the hardest part.
“I made a mistake. I’m sorry.”
Children copy what they see. When you own your errors, you model accountability, respect, and humility. Try it: apologize the next time you snap, then move on together.
“I noticed how kind you were.”
Specific compliments about character, like kindness, courage, or honesty, become part of how kids see themselves. Try it: catch one kind act this week and name it out loud.
