How to Wrap Your Hands for Kickboxing: A Step-by-Step Guide

If you’re new to kickboxing classes, one of the first things you’ll notice is that almost everyone wraps their hands before putting on gloves. It’s not just a habit — it’s an essential piece of protection that most beginners don’t think about until their first class.

Here’s everything you need to know about why hand wraps matter, and exactly how to put them on.

Why Hand Wraps Matter

Your hand contains 27 small bones, and your wrist is a complex joint built for flexibility, not repeated impact. When you throw a punch – especially on a heavy bag or pads – that force travels straight through your knuckles and into your wrist. Without support, that’s a fast way to end up with a sprained wrist or a fractured knuckle (commonly called a “boxer’s fracture”).

A proper hand wrap does three things:

  • Stabilizes the wrist joint, keeping it aligned on impact
  • Compresses the small bones of the hand, adding support during punches
  • Protects the knuckles from cuts and bruising, especially during bag or pad work

This matters just as much for a beginner in a fitness-focused kickboxing class as it does for someone training more seriously — wrist injuries don’t check your experience level first.

What You’ll Need

A pair of hand wraps, typically 120–180 inches long (longer wraps offer more wrist support)
Optional: quick wraps or gel wraps, a beginner-friendly alternative that slips on faster if you’re short on time before class

If you’re just starting out, most kickboxing gyms — including Evoke — will have loaner wraps available for your first few classes, so you don’t need to buy anything before your trial.

Step-by-Step: How to Wrap Your Hands

  1. Start at the wrist. Loop the wrap around your wrist 3 to 4 times, keeping it snug but not painfully tight. You should still be able to make a full fist comfortably.
  2. Anchor the thumb. Bring the wrap up and around your thumb once, then back across the top of your hand.
  3. Wrap between the fingers. Weave the wrap between each finger (starting from the pinky), crossing over the back of the hand between each pass. This keeps your fingers separated and supported.
  4. Cover the knuckles. Once you’ve wrapped between all four fingers, bring the wrap back across your knuckles 2 to 3 times for padding.
  5. Reinforce the wrist. Finish by wrapping back around the wrist a couple more times for extra support.
  6. Secure the end. Most wraps have a Velcro closure at the end – press it firmly against the wrap to lock it in place.

Quick check before you start hitting anything: make a fist. You should feel supported, not restricted. If your fingers feel numb or tingly, it’s wrapped too tight – unwrap and start again.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Wrapping too loosely: defeats the purpose; your wrist won’t get real support.
  • Wrapping too tightly: can cut off circulation, especially during a long class.
  • Skipping the between-finger wraps:  this step protects against jammed or bent fingers during pad work.
  • Reusing damp wraps without drying them: bacteria and odor build up fast; always let your wraps air out fully between classes.

When to Replace Your Wraps

Most hand wraps last 6 to 12 months with regular training, depending on how often you train and how well you care for them. Replace them once the elastic loses stretch or the Velcro stops sticking firmly – a wrap that’s lost its grip won’t stay secure through a full class.
